BioBrew Ltd - Results of successful calf trial at Telford Farms
BioBrew Ltd. Director Andre Prassinos today announced the results of a recent dairy calf trial conducted at Telford Farms and coordinated by the Clutha Agricultural Development Board.
“Calves receiving BioBrew demonstrated improved feed conversion, improved handling characteristics and handled transitions from colostrum to warm milk and from warm milk to cold milk better than the control groups,” said Prassinos.
Eighty calves were split into four groups of twenty with two groups receiving BioBrew and two groups as control for the trial. All calves received the same amount of milk and were provided with ad‐lib access to calf meal.
“Trial groups and control groups achieved similar weight gains but the BioBrew calves required approximately ½ kilo less bought‐in meal per day than the control groups for this weight gain, a significant economic advantage,” Prassinos added.
“Kim Phillips of Telford Farms did a superb job with the calves, the Clutha Agricultural Development Board, especially Malcolm Deverson, did sound work coordinating the trial and Grant Bennett from Lincoln University structured the trial and handled the reporting at the conclusion of the trial,” Prassinos said.
“This trial demonstrates the capacity we have in the Clutha District to do significant work at the cutting edge of biotechnology. The next step is replication of the trial to confirm the observed results and to further investigate the potential that probiotics have for the dairy industry,” Prassinos concluded.
